COMMON BIRTH INJURIES

Geborgenheit

The most common birth injuries in the United States are:

  • Erb’s Palsy. Also known as shoulder palsy, this condition is caused by injury to nerves in the brachial plexus. Erb’s palsy may be caused by the indelicate or careless maneuvering of an infant during delivery. It may present as weakness in one arm, poor grip strength, or complete paralysis.
This birth injury may be a result of labor dystocia – a condition in which fetal positioning or size prevents the baby from progressing down the birth canal.
  • Cerebral Palsy. Most often the result of oxygen deprivation during labor and delivery, cerebral palsy impacts muscle strength, movement, and tone. It can also impact posture. Symptoms of cerebral palsy may include muscle rigidity or spasticity, tremors and involuntary movements, writhing or slow movements, and muscles that are either too stiff or too floppy.
This birth injury may be the result of labor dystocia, inadequate monitoring during labor, delayed C-Section, or any complication that causes fetal oxygen deprivation.
  • Brain Injury. In addition to cerebral palsy, complications related to perinatal asphyxia include epilepsy, hyperactivity, severe organ damage, and neurodegenerative diseases. Oxygen deprivation during labor and delivery may also prove fatal.
  • Spinal Cord Injury. Injury to the spinal cord during delivery may result in a permanent loss of ability. This birth injury may be related to labor dystocia and other unforeseen complications that will require additional assistance during delivery. As with Erb’s palsy, it may be the forceful or careless repositioning of the baby that causes a spinal cord injury during birth.
