Blood clots are among the most serious dangers patients face after a serious injury, such as those caused by a motor vehicle accident. It is, sadly, quite common for a victim to survive the immediate aftermath of physical trauma, then suffer a fatal blood clot shortly after.
To prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs (known as a pulmonary embolism), doctors often place devices in the inferior vena cava, which is the largest vein in the body. These devices, known as IVC filters, are designed to prevent pulmonary embolisms.
Unfortunately, many of these filters have been associated with serious health problems. Lawsuits are currently pending against many manufacturers of these defective medical devices.
If you’ve suffered a serious injury or adverse event after being implanted with an IVC filter, please call Chance, Forlines, Carter & King, PC today at 404-760-7400 for a free consultation. We’re located in Atlanta, Georgia, but we accept defective product cases from around the country.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT IVC FILTERS
The inferior vena cava moves blood from your lower extremities to your heart and lungs. Because many blood clots initially develop in the legs, this vein often acts as a deadly highway clots take to reach your lungs, causing pulmonary embolisms.
An IVC filter is essentially a small metal tube that is placed in the vein. Its wires catch clots before they have a chance to travel up the vein and reach your lungs. There are both permanent and retrievable versions of IVC filters.
The problems come with retrievable IVC filters. In 2010, the FDA announced a safety alert for retrievable IVC filters, saying they were often associated with:
- Filter migration
- Perforation
- Fracture
- Device components becoming detached
Many companies design and manufacture retrievable IVC filters, which means there are currently legal issues surrounding many of America’s largest device manufacturers. These include:
- Bard
- Volcano
- Cook
- Johnson & Johnson
Our defective product lawyers understand the complexities of the IVC filter cases and can help if you suffered an injury as a result of a failure with your IVC failure. We urge you to arrange a consultation as soon as possible.
