WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT IVC FILTERS

The inferior vena cava moves blood from your lower extremities to your heart and lungs. Because many blood clots initially develop in the legs, this vein often acts as a deadly highway clots take to reach your lungs, causing pulmonary embolisms.

An IVC filter is essentially a small metal tube that is placed in the vein. Its wires catch clots before they have a chance to travel up the vein and reach your lungs. There are both permanent and retrievable versions of IVC filters.

The problems come with retrievable IVC filters. In 2010, the FDA announced a safety alert for retrievable IVC filters, saying they were often associated with:
