Cerebral palsy is a disorder caused by malformation or damage to the brain before, during, or after birth. The condition is serious and lifelong, and may result in complications including:
- Intellectual and learning difficulties
- Speech, vision, or hearing problems
- Poor muscle control and coordination
- Poor reflexes
- Chronic pain
- Seizures
- Abnormal touch perceptions
- Urinary incontinence
- Mental health conditions
Children diagnosed with cerebral palsy may also be more likely to struggle with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and may be more prone to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well.
If your child has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and you suspect medical negligence played a role, you may have cause to file a birth injury lawsuit. Call Chance, Forlines, Carter & King at 404-760-7400 to schedule a complimentary case review and learn more. Located in Atlanta, we welcome families struggling with the complexities of birth injury from all parts of Georgia.

Cerebral palsy is a lifelong disorder. This can be a profound economic and emotional burden.
The National Institutes of Health reports that lifetime costs for individuals with cerebral palsy can reach or exceed $2 million. If the disorder was a result of medical negligence, these costs should not be shouldered by the victim’s family, they should be covered through a suitable medical malpractice settlement that also takes into account the emotional struggles this disorder will cause. Our cerebral palsy injury attorneys are prepared to fight for the fair and full compensation you deserve.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF CEREBRAL PALSY?
When cerebral palsy is a result of medical malpractice, it is typically caused by a lack of oxygen during delivery. Asphyxiation during birth is often a result of improper monitoring, though several other factors can play a role as well.
Additional causes of cerebral palsy may include:
- Improper use of delivery equipment
- Undiagnosed fetal or maternal infection
- Intracranial bleeding
- Umbilical cord complications
- Cephalopelvic disproportion
- Shoulder dystocia
- Placental disruption
- Uterine rupture
- Preeclampsia
A majority of cerebral palsy claims arising from birth injury involve fetal asphyxiation. It is possible that several cases of cerebral palsy could be avoided every year if C-Sections were performed as soon as needed. Delayed C-Section or vaginal birth following C-Section are both risk factors for oxygen deprivation and brain injury during labor and delivery.
If your labor or delivery was rocky and your child has been diagnosed with brain injury or cerebral palsy, you may have cause to file suit. Call our Atlanta birth injury lawyers today to schedule a free consultation and learn more.
SYMPTOMS OF CEREBRAL PALSY
There are several symptoms of cerebral palsy that should be brought to the attention of your child’s doctor:
- Excessive muscle stiffness or rigidity
- Muscle spasticity or involuntary tremors
- Muscle weakness
- Lack of muscle coordination
- Frequent slow, writing movements
- Difficulties sucking or eating
These issues may be noticeable even in early infancy. Some of the symptoms of cerebral palsy will, however, not be apparent until benchmarks are not being met. These include:
- Difficulties rolling over and crawling
- Difficulties walking
- Favoring one side of the body
- Delay in fine motor skills
- Delay in speech development
It is common for babies with cerebral palsy to strongly favor one side of the body. This often results in asymmetrical movements which may include using just one arm to push when crawling or dragging one foot or leg when walking. These symptoms may indicate brain injury sustained during birth and should be discussed with a doctor as soon as they appear.
