It’s difficult to think of an ingredient that’s more ubiquitous in American medicine cabinets than talc. A key ingredient in talcum powder, baby powder and a range of other products, talc is so omnipresent that you probably don’t even think much about it.
However, recent events have begun to raise fears that talc can present a serious threat of ovarian cancer in women. The evidence for this is strong enough that a jury recently awarded the family of an Alabama woman $72 million in a case against Johnson & Johnson.
Our product liability attorneys want to talk to you if you or a family member contracted ovarian cancer after using a talc-based product. Please call Chance, Forlines, Carter & King, PC today at 404-760-7400 for a free consultation.
THE SITUATION
Talc is a clay mineral that is not dissoluble in water, which makes it quite useful. It’s an extraordinarily common mineral with a huge range of uses, including electronics, manufacturing and even food preparation.
But by far its most well-known use is talcum powder or baby powder. Despite its name, baby powder is frequently used by adults who are dealing with excess moisture or chafing on sensitive parts of the body. It’s the rare household that doesn’t have some product that contains talc.
However, it has recently become apparent that talc-based products can pose a serious danger to women who use baby powder on or around their genitalia. An Alabama woman named Jackie Fox died of ovarian cancer after using baby powder and other talc-based feminine products.
A St. Louis jury awarded her family $72 million in damages after the family suited the giant corporation Johnson & Johnson. The lawsuit was no coincidence- documents indicate that a medical consultant warned the company in the late 90’s of the link between talc and ovarian cancer.
Doctors have long warned parents not to use talcum powder on their babies for fear of causing respiratory illnesses. Now, many are advising female patients not to use talc-based products for feminine hygiene purposes.
There are more than a thousand talc-related lawsuits pending against Johnson & Johnson, and the Fox verdict makes clear that these cases have a legitimate chance of success.
