NURSING HOME NEGLECT

Nursing home neglect is not always as obvious as abuse. Whereas the latter often leaves visible signs, neglect can prove much more insidious. If you suspect a loved one is dealing with neglect in his or her nursing home, it is important to take swift action. Failure to intervene may result in serious or even fatal harm to your loved one.

SIGNS OF NURSING HOME NEGLECT

One of the clearest signs of nursing home neglect is residents being left alone. This may occur in their rooms, in hallways, by windows, or anywhere else they can be put “out of the way” by staff. If upon visiting your loved one you find he or she is almost always alone, it is entirely possible they are being neglected. Additional signs to look for include:

  • Unusually low levels of energy
  • Sudden loss of weight
  • Bedsores
  • Strange behavior (indicating improper medication administration)
  • Untidy or unsanitary conditions

If your loved one is lucid, listening to them is the best way to learn about what they are experiencing. Pay attention also to how staff and management interact with your loved one while you are there. Do they know his or her name? Are they kind and thoughtful? Do they exhibit signs of familiarity with needs and idiosyncrasies? All of these things can provide insight into your loved one’s daily life.
